Your safety and the safety of others are very important.

We have provided many important safety messages in this manual and on your appliance. Always read and obey all safety messages.

This is the safety alert symbol.
This symbol alerts you to potential hazards that can kill or hurt you and others.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, injury to persons, or damage when using the cooktop, follow basic precautions, including the following:

  • CAUTION: Do not store items of interest to children in cabinets above a cook top – Children climbing on the cook top to reach items could be seriously injured.
  • Proper Installation: The appliance, when installed, must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes, or in the absence of local codes, with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 or the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA C22.1-02. In Canada, the appliance must be electrically grounded in accordance with Canadian Electrical Code. Be sure your appliance is properly installed and grounded by a qualified technician.
  • Never Use Your Cook top for Warming or Heating the Room.
  • Do Not Leave Children Alone – Children should not be left alone or unattended in area where cook top is in use. They should never be allowed to sit or stand on any part of the cook top.
  • This appliance is not intended for use by people (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capacities are different or impaired or who lack the necessary experience or knowledge/expertise to do so, unless such persons are supervised or are trained to operate the appliance by a person who accepts responsibility for their safety.
  • Wear Proper Apparel – Loose-fitting or hanging garments should never be worn while using the cook top.
  • User Servicing – Do not repair or replace any part of the cook top unless specifically recommended in the manual. All other servicing should be referred to a qualified technician.
  • Storage on Cook top: Flammable materials should not be stored near surface units.
  • WARNING: Failing to supervise an electric grill when cooking on it with oil or fat is dangerous and constitutes a fire hazard.
  • Do Not Use Water on Grease Fires: Smother fire or flame or use dry chemical or foam-type extinguisher.
  • Do not use replacement parts that have not been recommended by the manufacturer (e.g. parts made at home using a 3D printer).
  • Use Only Dry Potholders: Moist or damp potholders on hot surfaces may result in burns from steam. Do not let  potholder touch hot heating elements. Do not use a towel or other bulky cloth.
  • DO NOT TOUCH SURFACE UNITS OR AREAS NEAR UNITS: Surface units may be hot even though they are dark in color. Areas near surface units may become hot enough to cause burns. During and after use, do not touch, or let clothing or other flammable materials contact surface units or areas near units until they have had sufficient time to cool. Among those areas are the cook top and surfaces facing the cook top.
  • Use Proper Pan Size: This cook top is equipped with one or more surface units of different size. Select utensils having flat bottoms large enough to cover the surface unit heating element. The use of undersized utensils will expose a portion of the heating element to direct contact and may result in ignition of clothing. Proper relationship of utensil to burner will also improve efficiency.
  • Never Leave Surface Units Unattended at High Heat Settings:  Boil over causes smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite.
  • CAUTION: The cooking process should be supervised. Short cooking periods require constant supervision.
  • Glazed Cooking Utensils: Only certain types of glass, glass/ceramic, ceramic, earthenware, or other glazed utensils are suitable for cook top service without breaking due to the sudden change in temperature.
  • Utensil Handles Should Be Turned Inward and Not Extend Over Adjacent Surface Units – To reduce the risk of burns, ignition of flammable materials, and spillage due to unintentional contact with the utensil, the handle of a utensil should be positioned so that it is turned inward, and does not extend over adjacent surface units.
  • Metal objects, such as knives, forks, spoons and lids should not be left on the cooking surface as they may get hot.
  • Do Not Cook on Broken Cook top: If cook top should break, cleaning solutions and spillovers may penetrate the broken cook top and create a risk of electric shock. Contact a qualified technician immediately. Turn off the device to avoid the possibility of electric shock.
  • If the power supply cord gets damaged, have it replaced by the manufacturer, the latter’s service agent or by qualified personnel in order to avoid danger.
  • Clean Cook top With Caution: If a wet sponge or cloth is used to wipe spills on a hot cooking area, be careful to avoid steam burn. Some cleaners can produce noxious fumes if applied to a hot surface.
  • The device is not designed to be started up by an external timer or by a separate remote control system.

For units with ventilating hood

  • Clean Ventilating Hoods Frequently: Grease should not be allowed to accumulate on hood or filter.
  • When flaming foods under the hood, turn the fan on.

For units with coil elements

  • Make Sure Reflector Pans or Drip Bowls Are in Place: Absence of these pans or bowls during cooking may subject wiring or components underneath to damage.
  • Protective Liners: Do not use aluminum foil to line surface unit drip bowls, except as suggested in the manual. Improper installation of these liners may result in a risk of electric shock, or fire.
  • Do Not Soak Removable Heating Elements: Heating elements should never be immersed in water.

For smart enabled ranges and ovens

  • Remote operation: This appliance is configurable to allow remote operation at any time. Do not store any flammable materials or temperature sensitive items inside, on top or near surface units of the appliance.

COOK TOP MAINTENANCE AND CARE

General Cleaning

IMPORTANT: Before cleaning, make sure all controls are OFF and the cook top is cool. Always follow label instructions on cleaning products.

Soap, water, and a soft cloth or sponge are suggested first unless otherwise noted. When cleaning the cook top with electronic controls, lock the controls.

STAINLESS STEEL (on some models)

To avoid damage to stainless steel surfaces, do not use soap filled scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, Cook top Cleaner, steel wool pads, gritty washcloths or abrasive paper towels.

Cleaning Method:

Rub in direction of grain to avoid damaging.

  • Vinegar for hard water spots.

COOK TOP  CONTROLS

To avoid damage to the cook top controls, do not use steel wool, abrasive cleansers, or oven cleaner.
To avoid damage, do not soak knobs.
When replacing knobs, make sure knobs are in the Off position.
Do not remove seals under knobs.

Cleaning Method:

  •  Soap and water: Pull knobs straight away from control panel to remove.

Do not place knobs in dishwasher.

Do not soak knobs.

CERAMIC GLASS (on some models)

Cleaning Method:
To avoid damaging the cook top, do not use steel wool, abrasive powder cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover, or ammonia.

  1. Remove food/residue with the Cook top Scraper.
    • For best results, use the Cook top Scraper while the cook top is still warm but not hot to the touch. It is recommended to wear an oven mitt while scraping the warm cook top.
    • Hold the Cook top Scraper at approximately a 45° angle against the glass surface and scrape the residue. It will be necessary to apply pressure in order to remove the residue.
      Allow the cook top to cool down completely before proceeding to Step 2.
  2. Apply a few dime-sized drops of afresh® Cook top Cleaner to the affected areas.
    • Rub afresh® Cook top Cleaner onto the cook top surface with the blue Cook top Cleaning Pad. Some pressure is needed to remove stubborn stains.
    • Allow the cleaner to dry to a white haze before proceeding to Step 3.
  3. Polish with a clean, dry cloth or a clean, dry paper towel.
    • Repeat steps 1 through 3 as necessary for stubborn or burned-on stains.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS REQUIREMENTS

Tools and Parts

Gather the required tools and parts before starting installation. Read and follow the instructions provided with any tools listed here.
Tools needed

  • Tape measure
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Marker or pencil
  • Pliers
  • 1/4″ (6.4 mm) nut driver

Parts supplied
Check that all parts are included.

  • Clamp brackets (2)
  • 21/2″ (6.4 cm) clamping Screws (2)
  • Foam strip roll

Parts needed

  • A UL listed or CSA approved connector for 1/2″ (1.3 cm) diameter conduit.
  • UL listed wire connectors.

Check local codes. Check existing electrical supply. See the “Electrical Requirements” section.

It is recommended that all electrical connections be made by a licensed, qualified electrical installer.

NOTE: Be sure to purchase only Whirlpool factory-certified parts and accessories for your appliance. Your installation may require additional parts. To order, refer to the contact information referenced in your Quick Start Guide.

Location Requirements

Make sure you have everything needed for correct installation. It is the responsibility of the installer to comply with the installation clearances specified in these instructions.

IMPORTANT: Observe all governing codes and ordinances. When installing cook top, use minimum dimensions given.

  • To eliminate the risk of burns or fire by reaching over the heated surface units, cabinet storage space located above the surface units should be avoided. If cabinet storage is to be provided, the risk can be reduced by installing a range hood that projects horizontally a minimum of 5″ (12.7 cm) beyond the bottom of the cabinets.
  • The cook top must be a specified cook top that is approved to be installed either alone or over an under counter built-in oven. Check the cook top base for an approved installation label for your cook top model number and approved combinations of cook tops and ovens that can be installed. If you do not find this label, your cook top may not be approved for use over an under counter built-in oven. Contact your dealer to confirm that your cook top is approved.
  • The cook top must be installed in a level counter top.
  • Ovens approved for this type of installation will have an approval label located on the top of the oven. If you do not find this label, contact your dealer to confirm that your oven is approved. Refer to oven manufacturer’s Installation Instructions for approval for built-in under counter use and proper cutout dimensions.
  • When installing cook top over an under counter built-in oven, do not fasten cook top to counter top with clamps. This will make the cook top easier to remove if future servicing becomes necessary.
  • Use the counter top opening dimensions that are given with these Installation Instructions. Given dimensions are minimum clearances and provide 0″ (0 cm) clearance.
  • Grounded electrical supply is required. See “Electrical Requirements” section.

IMPORTANT: To avoid damage to your cabinets, check with your builder or cabinet supplier to make sure that the materials used will not discolor, determinate or sustain other damage.

Mobile Home: Additional Installation Requirements

The installation of this cook top must conform to the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standard, Title 24 CFR, Part 3280 (formerly the Federal Standard for Mobile Home Construction and Safety, Title 24, HUD Part 280). When such standard is not applicable, use the Standard for Manufactured Home Installations, ANSI A225.1/NFPA 501A or with local codes.

In Canada, the installation of this cook top must conform with the current standards CAN/CSA-Z240.1-latest edition, or local codes.

Cabinet Dimensions

IMPORTANT: If installing a range hood or microwave hood combination above the cook top, follow range hood or microwave hood combination instructions for dimensional clearances above the cook top surface.

  • A: 15″ (38.1 cm) on 15″ (38.1 cm) models; 30″ (76.2 cm) on 30″ (76.2 cm) models; 36″ (91.4 cm) on 36″ (91.4 cm) models
  • B: Combustible area above countertop (shown by dashed box above)

NOTE: After making the counter top cutout, some installations may require notching down the base cabinet side walls to clear the cook top base. To avoid this modification, use a base cabinet with sidewalls wider than the cutout.

If cabinet has a drawer, a 3″ (7.6 cm) depth clearance from the counter top to the top of the drawer (or other obstruction) in base cabinet is required.

For 15″ (38.1 cm) model only:

Before You Make the Electrical Connection:

To properly install your cook top, you must determine the type of electrical connection you will be using and follow the instructions provided for it here.

Use a 3-wire or 4-wire, 3 phase 120/208 V or single phase 120/ 240 V, 60 Hz, AC only. The model/serial number rating plate is located on the metal cabinet underneath the cook top. See the following illustration.

A. Model/serial number plate

According the the NEC, NFPA 70 – 2017 Table 220.55 the demand load for products rated 8.75 kW or less is 80% of the rated value.

Products rated 8.75 to 12 kW have a demand load of 8 kW.

  • The cook top is rated for 120/208 V or 120/240 V. Some models have a neutral (white) wire.
  • The cook top should be connected directly to the junction box through flexible, armored or nonmetallic sheathed, copper cable. The flexible, armored cable extending from the fuse box or circuit breaker box should be connected directly to the junction box.
  • Locate the junction box to allow as much slack as possible between the junction box and the cook top so that the cook top can be moved if servicing becomes necessary in the future.
  • Do not cut the conduit. Use the length of conduit provided.
    A UL listed or CSA approved conduit connector must be provided at each end of the power supply cable (at the cook top and at the junction box). A listed conduit connector is already provided at the cook top.
  • If the house has aluminum wiring follow the procedure below:
    Connect the aluminum wiring using special connectors and/or tools designed and UL listed for joining copper to aluminum.

Follow the electrical connector manufacturer’s recommended procedure. Aluminum/copper connection must conform with local codes and industry accepted wiring practices.

INSTALLATION

Prepare Cook top for Installation

Excessive Weight Hazard

Use two or more people to move and install or uninstall appliance.

Failure to do so can result in back or other injury.

  1. Decide on the final location for the cook top.
  2. Using 2 or more people, place the cook top upside down on a covered surface.
  3. Remove foam strip from literature package. Remove backing from foam strip. Apply foam strip adhesive-side down around bottom of cook top, flush with edge.
    NOTE: The foam strip covers the underside of the cook top glass to avoid damage from debris and helps the cooktop sit flat on uneven counters.

Style 1: Cook top over under counter built-in oven
IMPORTANT: Clamping brackets should not be used.

  1. Using 2 or more people, place cook top right side up into the cutout.
    NOTE: Make sure that the front edge of the cook top is parallel to the front edge of the counter top. If repositioning is needed, lift entire cook top up from cutout to avoid scratching the counter top.
    2. Place cook top in cutout.

Style 2: Cook top over cabinets

  1. Determine whether your cabinet construction provides clearance for installing clamp brackets at cook top base ends. This is the recommended location. Clamp brackets can be installed on the front and back of cook top base bottom, if necessary.
    • A. Attachment screw holes for optional front and back location

  2. The clamp brackets can be installed before or after the cook top is placed into the cutout. Complete the following steps for the option you choose.

Installing Brackets Before Placing Cook top in Cutout

  1. Remove the attachment screws for the selected bracket locations from the bottom of the cook top base.
  2. Select bracket mounting holes that will allow the bracket to extend far enough out from the cook top for the installation of 21/2″ (6.4 cm) clamping screws. See “Attach Cook top to Counter top” for illustration of clamping screw installation.

  3. Attach brackets to bottom of cook top base with bracket attachment screws using the bracket mounting holes selected in Step 2.
  4. Rotate brackets so they do not extend beyond edge of cook top base.
  5. Tighten screws just enough to hold brackets in place when cook top is put in cutout.
  6. Turn the cook top right side up and place in cutout.
    NOTE: Make sure that the front edge of the cook top is parallel to the front edge of the counter top. If repositioning is needed, lift entire cook top up from cutout to avoid scratching the counter top.
  7. Loosen the screws and rotate the brackets so that they are perpendicular to the edge of the cook top base and extend
    beyond its edge. Securely tighten screws.

Installing Brackets After Placing Cook top in Cutout

  1. Using 2 or more people, place cook top in cutout.
    NOTE: Make sure that the front edge of the cook top is parallel to the front edge of the counter top. If repositioning is needed, lift entire cook top up from cutout to avoid scratching the counter op.
  2. Remove the attachment screws for the selected bracket locations from the bottom of the cook top base.
  3. Select bracket mounting holes that will allow the bracket to extend far enough out from the cook top for the installation of 21/2″ (6.4 cm) clamping screws.
    • A. Glass cook top

  4. Attach brackets to bottom of cook top base with bracket attachment screws using the bracket mounting holes selected in Step 3. Securely tighten screws.

For 15″ (38.1 cm) model only:

This cook top is manufactured with a frame connected, green or bare ground wire. Connect the cook top cable to the junction box through the UL listed or CSA approved conduit connector.

  1. Disconnect power.
  2. Remove junction box cover, if present
  3. Connect the flexible cable conduit from the cook top to the junction box using a UL listed or CSA approved conduit connector
  4. Tighten screws on conduit connector if present.
  5. See “Electrical Connection Options Chart” to complete installation for your type of electrical connection.

  1. Place the 21/2″ (6.4 cm) clamping screws into the outermost hole in the clamping bracket.
  2. Check that the cook top is still level.
  3. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws against the counter top. Do not over tighten.
Complete Installation
  1. Check that all parts are now installed. If there is an extra part, go back through the steps to see which step was skipped.
  2. Check that you have all your tools.
  3. Dispose of/recycle all packaging materials.
  4.  Use a mild solution of liquid household cleaner and warm water to clean cook top before use. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. For more information, see the “Cook top Maintenance and Care” section.
  5. Read the “Cook top Use” section in the Quick Start Guide.
  6. Reconnect power.
    NOTE: If the cook top does not work after turning on the power, check that a circuit breaker has not tripped or a household fuse has not blown. See online “Troubleshooting” section.
