Warning and Safety instructions

This vacuum cleaner conforms to current safety requirements. Inappropriate use can lead to personal injury and damage to property.
Please read the operating instructions before using the vacuum cleaner for the first time. They contain important information on the safety, use and maintenance of the vacuum cleaner. This will prevent oth personal injury and damage to the appliance.
In accordance with standard IEC 60335-1, Miele expressly and strongly advises that you read and follow the instructions in the “Connection” chapter as well as the safety instructions and earnings. Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions.
Keep these operating instructions in a safe place and pass them on to any future owner.
Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the power supply when you have finished using it, before changing any accessories, as well as for maintenance work, cleaning and troubleshooting. Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it.

Correct application
This vacuum cleaner is intended for cleaning flooring in domestic households and similar residential environments. This vacuum cleaner is not suitable for use on construction sites.

Warning and Safety instructions

• This vacuum cleaner can be used for all normal cleaning of carpets, rugs, and robust hard flooring.
•  This vacuum cleaner is not intended for outdoor use.
•  This vacuum cleaner is intended for use at altitudes of up to 4000 m above sea level.
•  The vacuum cleaner must only be used to vacuum dry floor surfaces. Do not vacuum people or animals. Any other types of use, modifications or alterations are not permitted.
•  This vacuum cleaner can only be used by people with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience or knowledge, if they are supervised whilst using it or have been shown how to use it in a safe way and understand and recognize the consequences of incorrect operation.
  Safety with children
•  Danger of suffocation.   Packaging,  e.g. plastic wrappings, must be kept out of the reach of babies and children. Whilst playing, children could become entangled in packaging or pull it over their heads and suffocate.
•  Children under 8 years of age must be kept away from the vacuum cleaner unless they are constantly supervised.
•  Children aged 8 and older may only use the vacuum cleaner without supervision if they have been shown how to use it in a safe manner. Children must be able to understand and recognize the possible dangers caused by incorrect operation.
• Children must not be allowed to clean or maintain the vacuum cleaner unsupervised.
• Please supervise children in the vicinity of the vacuum cleaner and do not let them play with it.
• Models with LEDs or radio controls on the handle: Keep batteries out of the reach of children.
  Technical safety
• Before using the vacuum cleaner and its accessories, check for any visible signs of damage. Do not use a damaged appliance.
• Ensure that the connection data on the data plate of the vacuum cleaner (voltage and frequency) match the mains electricity supply exactly. The vacuum cleaner is suitable for use ith 50 Hz or 60 Hz without modification.
• The mains electrical plug must be fitted with an appropriate fuse.
• AUS/NZ: The mains electrical outlet must be fitted with an appropriate circuit breaker.
• The reliable and safe operation of this vacuum cleaner can only be assured if it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.
• While the vacuum cleaner is under warranty, repairs should only be undertaken by a Miele authorized service technician. Otherwise, the warranty will be invalidated.
• Do not use the vacuum cleaner if the cable is damaged. If the cable is damaged it must be replaced together with a complete cable rewind. For safety reasons this must only be done by Miele Servicer a Miele authorized service technician.
• Miele can only guarantee the safety of the appliance when genuine Miele replacement parts are used. Faulty components must only be replaced with genuine Miele replacement parts.
• When vacuuming, in particular fine dust, e.g. sawdust, sand, plaster, flour, talcum powder etc., electrostatic charges build up naturally. Under certain conditions, these charges will be released. To avoid the unpleasant effects of these discharges, a metal inlay has been incorporated into the underside of the handle. Please make sure that you keep your hand in constant contact with this metal strip during vacuuming. If your vacuum cleaner is fitted with an Eco Comfort handle, make sure you hold it by the bowed section as this is where this metal strip is incorporated.
• Do not pull or carry the vacuum cleaner by the cable, and be careful not to damage the cable when withdrawing the plug from the socket. Keep the cable away from sharp edges and do not let it get squashed, for example, under a door. Avoid running the vacuum cleaner over the cable. This could damage the cable, plug or socket. The appliance must not be used if any of these have suffered damage.
• Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet. Clean only with a dry cloth or slightly damp cloth when disconnected from the mains supply.
•  Repairs should only be carried out by a Miele authorized service technician. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons can cause considerable danger to users.
  Correct use
•  To avoid the risk of damage, do not use the vacuum cleaner without the dustbag, dust compartment filter, and exhaust filter in place.
• The dust compartment cover will not close without a dustbag fitted. Do not force it.
• Do not vacuum up anything which has been burning or is still glowing e.g. cigarettes, ashes, or coal, whether glowing or apparently extinguished.
•  Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum toner dust. Toner, such as that used in printers and photocopiers, can conduct electricity.
• Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum up any water, liquid, or damp dirt. Wait until any freshly cleaned or shampooed rugs or carpets are completely dry before attempting to vacuum.
•  Do not vacuum up any inflammable or combustible liquids or gases and do not vacuum in areas where such substances are stored.
•   Do not vacuum at head height and do not let the suction get anywhere near person’s head.
• Important information on the handling of batteries (for models with LEDs or radio controls on the handle):
  – Do not short-circuit or recharge batteries, or throw them into a fire.
  – Disposing of batteries: Remove the batteries from the handle and dispose of them in a municipal recycling facility. Do not dispose of batteries with normal household waste.
  Accessories
•  To avoid the risk of injury when vacuuming with a Miele Turbobrush, do not touch the rotating roller brush.
•  It is not advisable to vacuum directly with the handle, i.e. without an accessory attached as the rim could get damaged and you could hurt yourself on sharp edges.
•  Only use dustbags, filters and accessories bearing the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging. The manufacturer cannot otherwise guarantee the safety of the product.

Caring for the environment

Disposal of the packing material
The packaging is designed to protect the appliance from damage during transportation. The packaging materials used are selected from materials that are environmentally friendly for disposal and should be recycled.
Recycling the packaging reduces the use of raw materials in the manufacturing process and also reduces the amount of waste in landfill sites.
Disposing of the dustbag and filters
Dustbags and filters are made from environmentally friendly materials and can be disposed of with the normal household waste, as long as they have been used exclusively for general household dust.

Disposing of your old appliance
Before disposing of your old appliance remove the dust bag and filters and dispose of them with your household waste.
Electrical and electronic appliances often contain valuable materials. They also contain specific materials, compounds and components, which were essential for their correct function and safety. These could be hazardous to human health and to the environment if disposed of with your domestic waste or if handled incorrectly. Please do not, therefore, dispose of your old appliance with your household waste.

Please dispose of it at your local community waste collection/recycling center for electrical and electronic appliances, or contact our dealer or Miele for advice. You are also responsible (by aw, depending on the country) for deleting any personal data that may be stored on the appliance being disposed of. Please ensure that your old appliance poses no risk to children while being stored prior to disposal.

Disposing of old batteries
In many cases, electrical and electronic appliances contain batteries that must not be disposed of with household waste after use. You are legally obliged (depending on the country) to remove any old batteries which are not securely enclosed by the vacuum cleaner and to take them to a suitable collection point (e.g. retailer) here they can be handed in ree of charge. Batteries may contain substances that can be hazardous to human health and the environment.
The labeling on the battery will provide further information. The bin symbol with a cross through it means that the batteries must not be disposed of in the household waste. A bin with a cross through it that also has one or more chemical symbols on it indicates that the battery contains lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and/or mercury (Hg).

Old batteries contain valuable raw materials that can be recycled. Disposing of batteries separately makes them easier to handle and recycle.

Notes on Delegated Regulation (EU) No. 665/2013 (country-specific) and 666/2013
This vacuum cleaner is a domestic vacuum cleaner and is classified as a universal vacuum cleaner in accordance with the above-mentioned regulations.
These operating instructions and additional information are available to download from the Miele website at www.miele.com.
The annual energy consumption stated on the EU datasheet and the online energy efficiency label (both available in country-specific versions) describe the indicative annual energy consumption (kWh per year), based on 50 cleaning cycles. Actual energy consumption depends on how the vacuum cleaner is used.
All tests and calculations were carried out according to the following harmonized standards applicable at the time in due consideration of the published regulation guidelines of the European Commission from September 2014: a) EN 60312-1 Vacuum cleaners for household use – Part 1: Dry vacuum cleaners – Methods for measuring the performance.
b) EN 60704-2-1 Household and similar electrical appliances – Test code for the determination f airborne acoustical noise – Part 2-1: Particular requirements or vacuum cleaners.
c) EN 60335-2-2 Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2-2: Particular requirements for vacuum cleaner and water suction appliances.
Not all floorheads and accessories supplied with the vacuum cleaner are intended for intensive cleaning of carpets or hard floors as described in the regulations. The following floorheads and settings were used to determine the values:
For energy consumption and cleaning class on the carpet and hard floors and sound power level on the carpet, the adjustable floorhead was used with the brush retracted (press the footswitch).
The values on the EU datasheet and the online energy efficiency label (both available in country-specific versions) refer exclusively to the combinations and settings of floorheads on the different floor surfaces described here.
Only original Miele dustbags, motor protection filters, and exhaust filters were used for all measurements.

Illustrations

The illustrations referred to in the text are shown on the fold-out pages at the end of these operating instructions.

Connection

Attaching the suction hose (Fig. 01 + 02)

• Insert the hose connector into the suction opening on the vacuum cleaner until it clicks into position. To do this, line up the guides on the two pieces.
•  If you want to separate the pieces again, press the release catches at the side of the hose connector, and pull the hose out of the suction opening.

Connecting the suction hose to the handle (Fig. 03)

•  Insert the suction hose into the handle until it clicks into position.

Connecting the handle to the suction tube (Fig. 04)

•  Insert the handle into the suction tube until it clicks into position. To do this, line up the guides on the two pieces.
• To detach the handle from the suction tube, press the release catch and pull the handle out of the suction tube, twisting it slightly as you do so.

Connecting the telescopic tube to the floorhead (Fig. 05)

•  Push the telescopic tube into the floorhead and turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise until it clicks into position.
•  To detach the floorhead from the suction tube press the release button and pull  the suction tube away from the floorhead, twisting it slightly as you do so.

Inserting batteries into the LED handle (Fig. 06 + 07)
(depending on model)

1. Loosen the screw on the cover.
2. Press in the sides of the cover to release the retainers and remove the cover.
3. Take out the battery holder and insert the  3 batteries supplied. Make sure the polarity is correct.
4.  Refit the battery holder. Arrows are marked on the battery holder and battery compartment as a fitting aid. They should point in the same direction.
5. Replace the cover and tighten the screw back up again.

Activating the timestrip® filter change indicator on the exhaust filter
Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as  standard with one of the following exhaust filters (Fig. 08):
a  AirClean
b AirClean Plus 50 (light blue)
c Silence AirClean 50 (grey)
d Active AirClean 50 (black)
e HEPA AirClean 50 (white)
If your vacuum cleaner is fitted with filter c, d, or e, you need to activate the timestrip® filter change indicator.

• Press the release catch for the dust compartment lid and raise the lid as far as it will go (Fig. 09).
• Remove the indicator strip (Fig. 10).
• Press the timestrip® filter change indicator (Fig. 11).
  After approx. 10–15 seconds,   hin red line will appear on the left-hand side of the display (Fig.12).
•  Close the dust compartment lid securely, making sure it clicks into position. Take care not to trap the dustbag when doing so.

How the exhaust filter timestrip® change indicator works
The exhaust filter timestrip® change indicator shows the remaining functional life of the exhaust filter. After approx. 50 operating hours the display will be completely filled with red (Fig. 13). 50 operating hours equates to approximately one year of use.

Using the accessories supplied (Fig. 14)

1. Crevice nozzle
   For cleaning in folds, crevices or corners.
2. Dusting brush with natural bristles
   For cleaning skirting boards, as well as ornate, carved or particularly delicate objects. The head can be swiveled to adjust the angle.
3. Upholstery nozzle
   For cleaning upholstery, mattresses, cushions, curtains, etc.

Some models are supplied as standard with one of the following accessories which are not illustrated:
– Turbobrush
– AllergoTeQ floorhead
These are supplied with their own operating instructions.
To open the accessories compartment (Fig.15)

• Press the release button on the accessories compartment lid.

The accessories compartment will then open.

• Take out the accessory you require.
• Press down firmly on the lid to close it.

Use

Adjusting the dusting brush integrated in the Eco Comfort handle (Fig. 16)
Some models are equipped with an Eco Comfort handle.
The dusting brush is suitable for vacuuming scratch-resistant surfaces, e.g. keyboards or vacuuming up crumbs.

• Press the release button on the dusting brush and  Bush the rush out until clearly engages in position.
• When you have finished dusting press the release button and push the brush back into its original position until it clicks into place.

Adjusting the telescopic suction tube (Fig. 17)
One part of the telescopic tube is packed inside the other, and it can be adjusted to suit your height for comfortable vacuuming.

• Grasp the release mechanism and adjust the telescopic suction tube to the required length.

Adjusting the floorhead (Fig. 18, 19 + 20)
Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the floorheads illustrated.
This vacuum cleaner can be used for the daily cleaning of carpets, rugs, and robust hard flooring.
Miele offers a range of other floorheads, brushes, and accessories for other types of flooring and special applications (see “Optional accessories”).

Please observe the flooring manufacturer’s cleaning and care instructions.
Clean hard flooring which is not susceptible to scratching, as well as flooring with gaps or deep crevices in it with the brush protruding:
Press the foot control.
his type of flooring can be briefly vacuumed with the brush retracted. Carpets and rugs should  e vacuumed with the brush retracted:
Press the foot control.
If the suction power of the adjustable floorhead seems too high, reduce the suction until the floorhead is easier to maneuver (see “Use” – “Regulating the suction power”).
Adjustable floorhead (Fig. 21)
The adjustable floorhead can also be used for vacuuming the stairs.
For safety reasons when vacuuming stairs, it is best to start at the bottom of the stairs and move upwards.
Unwinding the mains cable (Fig. 22)

• Pull the mains cable out to the required length.
• Insert the plug into the socket.

If vacuuming for longer than 30  minutes, the cable must be pulled out all the way. There is a risk of overheating and damage.

Rewinding the cable (Fig. 23)

•  Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it.
•  Step briefly n the cable rewind footswitch.
• The cable will then retract itself fully into the vacuum cleaner.
  If you do want the cable to retract completely into the vacuum cleaner you can stop it before it does. To do this, stakeholders of the cable whilst retracting it and give it a short pull when you want the rewinding to end.
  To switch on and off (Fig. 24)
•  Press the On/Off foot control
• To regulate the suction power
  The suction power can be regulated to suit the type of flooring being cleaned. Reducing the suction power reduces the amount of effort required to maneuver the floorhead.
  The vacuum cleaner has symbols on the controls that indicate the type of use the settings are suitable for.
  The setting selected will light up yellow

When using the adjustable floorhead,  if the suction seems too high, reduce the suction power until the floorhead is easier to maneuver.
Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following suction power selectors.
– Footswitches
– Footswitch with the option of selecting interim suction power levels
– Footswitch with Boost function
– Radio-control handle
– Radio-control handle with Boost function
Foot controls (Fig. 25)
The first time the vacuum cleaner is switched on, the highest setting will be selected automatically.
After that, the vacuum cleaner will switch on at the setting which was used previously.

• Press the + foot control to select a higher setting.
• Press the – foot control to select a lower setting.

Footswitches with the option of selecting interim suction power levels
Some models also offer the option of selecting power levels in between the standard 6 settings.
To activate this function

• Press the + footswitch until the maximum power level has been reached.
• Keep the – footswitch pressed until the symbol for the lower power level starts to flash.
• Then release the footswitch.

You can also activate this function from the lowest power level. To do so press and hold the + footswitch, until the symbol for the higher power level starts to flash.
To  select an interim power setting

• Press the – or + footswitch until the required power level has been reached.

After a minute without touching a control, the suction power interim setting will be saved to the next highest or lowest setting. The flashing will stop.
The next time the vacuum cleaner is used it will switch on with the saved interim suction power level.
This setting will be deleted if you then select one of the standard 6 power levels. Footswitch with Boost function (Fig. 26 + 27)
Some models also feature a Boost power function. This function uses increased power for a short period for vacuuming both fine and coarse stubborn soiling.

• Press the footswitch until the maximum power level has been reached.
• Then press the + footswitch again. This activates the Boost function for 20 seconds. The Boost indicator will light up yellow.

You now have the following options:

• Press the – footswitch before the 20 seconds have elapsed.
  This switches the Boost function off and activates maximum power.
• Press the + footswitch again once the 20 seconds have elapsed.
  This activates the Boost function a second time for 20 seconds. It can be activated three times in a row. After that, a pause of one minute is quired before reactivating it.
  Using the Boost power level changes the actual power consumption (see the section on EU Delegated Regulations).

Radio-control handle (Fig. 28)
When the vacuum cleaner is switched on with the On/Off foot control, The standby indicator on the vacuum cleaner will light up yellow.

• Press the Standby button on the handle.

The Standby indicator on the vacuum cleaner will go out.
The first time the vacuum cleaner is switched on, the highest setting will beselected automatically.
After that, the vacuum cleaner will switch on at the setting which was used previously.

•  Press the + button to select a higher suction power level.
• Press the – button to select a lower suction power level.

Radio-control handle with Boost function
Some models also feature a Boost power function. This function uses increased power for a short period for vacuuming both fine and coarse stubborn soiling.

•  Press the + control until the maximum power level has been reached.
• Then press the + control again.

This activates the Boost function for 20 seconds. The Boost indicator on the vacuum  cleaner will light up  yellow
You now have the following options

•  Press the – control before the 20 seconds have elapsed

This switches the Boost function off and activates maximum power.

• Press  the + control again once the 20 seconds have elapsed

This activates the Boost function for another 20 seconds. It can be activated three times in a row. After that, a pause of one minute is required before reactivating it.
Using the Boost power level changes the actual power consumption (see the section on EU Delegated Regulations).
Radio-control handle with Auto function
Some models also feature an Auto function.
Auto = automatic adjustment of the
suction power according to the flooring
Do not vacuum any light materials or curtains with the Auto power setting. These may be drawn into the vacuum cleaner and become damaged.
The first time the vacuum cleaner is switched on, the Auto power setting will be selected automatically.
After that, the vacuum cleaner will switch on at the setting which was used previously.

•  Press the + button to select a higher suction power level.
• Press the – button to select a lower suction power level.

Opening the air inlet valve (Fig. 29 + 30)
(not on models with LEDs or radio controls on the handle, or Eco Comfort handles)
It is easy to reduce the suction power for a short time, e.g. to prevent rugs or other objects from being sucked into the vacuum cleaner.

• Open the air inlet valve on the handle far enough to reduce the suction power.

The floorhead will be easier to maneuver.
During vacuuming

•  When vacuuming, pull the cleaner behind you n its wheels. You can stand it upright for vacuuming stairs and curtains etc.

When vacuuming – especially in the case of fine dust, e.g. sawdust, sand, flour, talcum powder, etc. – electrostatic charges build up naturally. Under certain conditions, these charges will be released. To avoid the unpleasant effects of these electrostatic discharges, a metal inlay has been incorporated into the underside of the handle. Please make sure that you keep your hand in constant contact with this metal strip during vacuuming. If your vacuum cleaner is fitted with an Eco Comfort handle, make sure that your hand is in contact with the top, arched part of the handle at all times. This is where the metal inlay is incorporated (Fig. 31, 32 + 33).
Interrupting operation (Fig. 28)
(for models with radio controls on the handle)
The vacuum cleaner can be paused for short breaks whilst vacuuming.

• Press the Standby button on the handle.

The Standby button is designed to pause the vacuum cleaner for short periods of time whilst vacuuming. There is a risk of overheating and damage.
An LED will indicate each time a button is pressed on the handle.
At the end of the pause you have 3 choices:
Press the Standby buttonagain.

The vacuum cleaner will switch on using the previously selected setting.

•  Press the + button.
  The vacuum cleaner will switch on using the highest setting.
• Press the – button.

The vacuum cleaner will witch on using the lowest setting.
Illuminating  the work area (Fig. 34)
(for models with the  LED handle)
Your vacuum cleaner is equipped with an LED on the handle to illuminate the work area.

•  Press the button n the LED handle.

The lighting will switch itself ff automatically after approx. 30 seconds.

Setting down, transportation and storage

Park System for pauses during vacuuming (Fig. 35)
The Park System allows you to conveniently park the suction tube and floorhead during pauses.

• Slot the floorhead or floor brush into the parking attachment on the vacuum cleaner.

If your vacuum cleaner is on a sloping surface, e.g. a ramp, retract the telescopic ube fully.
Park System On/Off switch
Some models are fitted with an On/Off switch in the Park System.

The vacuum cleaner switches off automatically when the floorhead or floor brushis slotted into the parking attachment. When it is removed from the parking attachment, the vacuum cleaner switches back on at the previously selected power level.
Park System for storage (Fig. 36)
Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the power supply when you have finished using it. Switch off at the wall socket and withdraw the plug.

•  Stand the vacuum cleaner upright.
• Retract the telescopic tube fully.
•  Slot the floorhead downwards into one of the parking attachments on the side of the vacuum cleaner.

This makes the vacuum cleaner easier to carry or store.

Maintenance

Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the electrical supply for maintenance work and for cleaning. Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it. The Miele filtration system consists of three  components: – Original Miele dustbag (type GN)
– Motor protection filter
– Original Miele exhaust filter
These will need to be replaced from time to time to ensure that your vacuum cleaner performs efficiently.

We recommend using only dustbags, filters, and accessories bearing the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging. Only these will guarantee the optimum performance of your vacuum cleaner and the best possible cleaning results.
Dustbags with the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging are not made from paper or paper-based materials and nor do they have a cardboard collar. This is why our dustbags are particularly long-lasting and reliable. Please note that faults and damage caused by the use of accessories that do not bear the “ORIGINALMiele” logon the packaging are not covered by the vacuum cleaner warranty.

Purchasing dustbags and filters

Original Miele dustbags and filters are available from the Miele webshop, the Miele Spare Parts Department, and your Miele dealer.
Original Miele dustbags and filters are identified by the “ORIGINAL Miele” logo on the packaging.

Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains 4 dustbags, one AirClean exhaust filter and one motor protection filter. Original Miele multipacks contain 16 dustbags, 4 AirClean exhaust filters and 4  motor protection filters (available depending on the country).
Original Miele exhaust filters can also be purchased separately from the Miele Customer Service Department or your Miele dealer. Please quote the model number of your vacuum cleaner when ordering to make sure you get the correct filter. You can also order these filters via the Miele webshop.

Airflow indicator (Fig. 37)

Change the dust bag when the colour marker in the airflow indicator turns red,or sooner if it is no longer effective (see possible reasons for this below).
Miele dustbags are intended to be used only once.  dispose of the dustbag when it is full. Do not attempt to re-use. Blocked pores reduce the suction power of the vacuum cleaner.
To check the airflow  indicator 

•  Attach the standard adjustable floorhead to the vacuum cleaner.
•  Switch the vacuum cleaner on and select the highest power setting.
•  Lift the floorhead off the floor a little.

How the airflow indicator works
The airflow indicator is set for normal household dust. This generally contains a mixture of dust,  hair, threads, carpet fluff, grit, etc.
However, if the cleaner has been used to vacuum up fine dust, such as plaster, brick dust, cement or flour,  the pores of the dustbag will become blocked very quickly. This affects the air permeability of the bag, and the marker will indicate that the bag is “full” even when it is not. The dust bag must be replaced if this is the case.
If, on the other hand, a large amount of hair and carpet fluff which typically contains a lot of air is vacuumed up, the indicator may fail to react even though the bag is full. You should still change it. Both these extremes can occur.

Remove the dust bag (Fig. 38) 

• Press the release catches at the side of the hose connector, and lift the hose from the socket.
• Lift the release catch for the dust compartment lid and raise the lid as far as it will go (Fig. 09).
  The dustbag has a flap that closes automatically when the dust compartment lid is raised to prevent any dust from escaping.
• Pull the dustbag out by the grip on the collar.

Fitting a dustbag (Fig. 39)

• Fit the new dust bag into the holder as far as it will go. Leave the dustbag folded up when you take it out of the box.
• Close the dust compartment lid securely, making sure it clicks into position. Take care not to trap the dustbag when doing so.
  A safety device prevents the lid from closing without a dustbag in place. Do not force it.
• Insert the hose connector into the suction opening on the vacuum cleaner until it clicks into position. To do this, line up the guides on the two pieces (Fig. 01 + 02).

 

Replacing the motor protection filter (Fig. 40)

Replace the motor protection filter whenever you start a new packet of dustbags.
Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains a motor protection filter. Multipacks contain four motor protection filters (available depending on the country).

• Open the dust compartment lid.
• Pull the dustbag out by the grip on the collar.
• Lift up the filter frame until it clicks and remove the old filter. Hold by the clean, unsoiled section to remove it.
•  Replace with a new motor protection filter.
• Close the filter frame.
• Fit the dustbag into the holder as far as it will go.
• Close the dust compartment lid securely, making sure it clicks into position. Take care not to trap the dustbag when doing so.

Replacing  the exhaust filter

Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters (Fig. 08):
a. AirClean
Replace this filter every time you start a  new packet of Miele dustbags. Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains one  AirClean exhaust filter. Multipacks contain 4  AirClean filters  (available depending on the country).
b. AirClean Plus 50 (light blue)
Replace this filter after approx. one year. Make a note of the date on the filter.
c. Silence AirClean 50 (grey)
d. Active AirClean 50 (black)
e. HEPA AirClean 50 (white)
Replace these filters when the timestrip® filter change indicator is completely red (Fig. 13). The indicator lights up after approximately 50 hours of operation, which is equivalent to about a year of average use. You can continue vacuuming when the light comes on. However, the suction power will be reduced as will the effectiveness of the filter if it is not replaced in good time.

Replacing the AirClean filter (Fig. 41 + 42) 

Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time.

• Open the dust compartment lid.
• Press the release catch on the filter grille and open the grille until it clicks.
• Grasp the used AirClean filter by one of the clean, unsoiled sections and take it out.
• Replace it with a new AirClean exhaust filter.
  If you wish to fit an AirClean Plus 50, Silence AirClean 50, Active AirClean 50 or HEPA AirClean 50 filter, see the “Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another” section.
• Close the filter grille.
• Close the dust compartment lid.

Replacing the AirClean Plus 50, Silence AirClean 50, Active AirClean 50 and HEPA AirClean 50 exhaust filters (Fig. 43+44)

Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time.

• Open the dust compartment lid.
• Lift the exhaust filter and remove it.
• Insert a new exhaust filter, making sure it goes in properly, then press it down into position.
• If you are using exhaust filter c, d or e, you must also activate the timestrip® filter change indicator (Fig.11).
  After approx. 10–15 seconds, a thin red line will appear in the left-hand side of the display (Fig. 12).
  If you wish to fit an AirClean filter, see the “Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another” section.
• Close the dust compartment lid.

Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another (Fig. 08) 

Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters:

a. AirClean
b. AirClean Plus 50 (light blue)
c. Silence AirClean 50 (grey)
d. Active AirClean 50 (black)
e. HEPA AirClean 50 (white)

Do not use more than one exhaust filter at a time.

1. If you wish to replace exhaust filter a with filter b, c, d or e it is essential that you remove the filter grille before you fit the new exhaust filter.
   If you are using exhaust filter c, d or e, you must also activate the timestrip® filter change indicator (Fig. 11).
2. If you wish to replace exhaust filter b, c, d or e with filter a it is essential that you also fit the filter grille* (Fig. 42).
   * Filter grille – see “Optional accessories”

Maintenance indicator with reset button(Fig. 45)

Some models are fitted with a maintenance indicator.
The indicator lights up after approx. 50 hours of operation, which is equivalent to about a year of average use. The level of soiling of the dust compartment filter and the exhaust filter must be checked at this point.
If the filters are replaced, the indicator must be reset. To do this the vacuum cleaner must be switched on.

• Press the reset button.

The maintenance indicator will go out and reset to zero.
The indicator can only be reset by pressing the reset button after the light has come on. Pressing the button at any other time will have no effect.
When to replace the battery in the radio-control handle
Change the battery approximately every 18 months. One 3 V battery (CR 2032) is required.
The vacuum cleaner can still be used when the battery has run out or if there is no battery fitted.

• Switch the vacuum cleaner on using the On/Off footswitch.
  The standby indicator on the vacuum cleaner will light up yellow.
• Press the restart button on the vacuum cleaner.
  The vacuum cleaner can continue to be used, but only at maximum power.

Keep batteries out of the reach of children. A swallowed battery can cause injury and even death. Even flat batteries can still be dangerous. If you suspect a child has been allowed a battery, seek medical advice immediately*. Examine devices and make sure the battery compartment is correctly secured, e.g. that the screw or other mechanical fastener is tightened. How to change the battery in the radio-control handle (Fig. 46) 

• Undo the screw on the battery compartment cover using a cross-tip screwdriver and then remove the cover.
• Replace the battery with a new one. Make sure the polarity is correct.
• Replace the cover and tighten the screw back up again.
• Dispose of the old battery in a municipal recycling facility.

When to replace the battery in the LED handle

Replace the batteries when necessary. 3 1.5 V batteries (AAA) are required.
How to change the battery in the LED handle (Fig. 06 + 07)

• Loosen the screw on the cover.
• Press in the sides of the cover to release the retainers and remove the cover.
• Take out the battery holder and insert the 3 batteries supplied. Make sure the polarity is correct.
• Refit the battery holder. Arrows are marked on the battery holder and battery compartment as a fitting aid. They should point in the same direction.
• Replace the cover and tighten the screw back up again.

Replacing the thread lifters (Fig. 47)

(not possible on EcoTeQ Plus floorheads)
The thread lifters on the suction inlet to the floorhead can be replaced. Replace the thread lifters if the pile has worn down.

• Lever the thread lifters from the slots. To do so se a suitable tool, e.g. a flat blade screwdriver.
• Fit new thread lifters.

Cleaning the roller on the AllTeQ floorhead (Fig. 48)

Clean the roller on the floorhead if required.

• Release bearing (with bayonet fitting) using a coin.
• Press the bearing out, and remove.
• Remove the roller.
• Remove any threads and hair,  replace the roller and refit the bearing, locking it back into position.

Replacement parts are available from your Miele dealer or from the Miele Spare Parts Dept.

Cleaning and care 

Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the electrical supply before cleaning it. Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it.
Vacuum cleaner and accessories

The vacuum cleaner and all plastic accessories can be cleaned with a proprietary cleaner suitable for plastic.

Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, glass cleaning agents, all-purpose cleaners or oil-based conditioning agents!

Dust compartment 
The dust compartment can, if necessary, be cleaned using a dry duster, brush or, if available, a second vacuum cleaner to vacuum the dust-out.
Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet! If moisture gets into the vacuum cleaner, there is a risk of electric shock.

Many malfunctions and faults that can occur in daily operations can be easily remedied. Time and money will be saved because a service call will not be needed.

Electrical connection for the UK
All electrical work should be carried out by a suitably qualified and competent person in strict accordance with current national and local safety regulations (BS 7671 in the  UK). The voltage and frequency are given on the data plate located underneath the vacuum cleaner. Please ensure that these match the household’s mains supply. The fuse rating is quoted on the plug. The appliance is supplied with a cable and molded plug ready for connection to a230-240 V/50 Hz a.c. single-phase supply.

Non-rewireable plugs BS 1363

The fuse cover must be re-fitted when changing the fuse, and if the fuse cover is lost the plug must not be used until a suitable replacement is obtained. The color of the orrect replacement cover is that of the colored insert in the base of the plug, or the color that is embossed in words on the base of the plug, (as applicable to the design of plug fitted). Replacement fuses should be ASTAapproved to BS1362 and have the correct rating. Replacement fuses and fuse covers may be purchased from your local electrical supplier.
